Recently we caught up with The Kairos lead singer Tom Dempsey to discuss their upcoming EP ‘Better Late Than Never’ and long awaited headline gig at Hangar 34 next week!
Your EP, “Better Late Than Never” comes out on the 19th May. How does it feel to be finally releasing it and do you feel the band have grown collectively as musicians in the process of its making?
“Terrifying. It’s only 5 songs but they have been in the works for so long, so the thought of them being out there is keeping me up at night but I think it’s a good thing. As a band, I feel like we are constantly learning what ways to improve ourselves. Realising that we can constantly get better was a big part of making this little record.”
What can someone who’s never heard your music before expect to hear on first listen?
“Without sounding big headed… good songs. That has been the focus for a long time. Everything else has come after. But the aim has always been putting out good quality songs.”
Who were the major influences in the process of writing and recording?
“In terms of recording, we spoke with Ben Harper a lot about Cath Marks and her work on stuff like Foals and Wolf Alice. In terms of the writing, the list is endless of who we listen to and admire. A lot of The La’s and Led Zeppelin crept onto this record.”
You’re playing your biggest headline gig yet in Hangar 34 on the 20th of May and it’s a big step-up in capacity from your previous gigs. Is there a buzz about the lads in the buildup, or any sort of nerves?
“It is properly nerve-wracking. But we know, as long as the rooms full, what we can pull off. It’s true that we haven’t put anything on this big before, but in terms of what we have practiced and the scale of the show itself, it’s going to leave an impression and will hopefully help this whole thing catch fire.”
Finally, what can the audience expect on the 20th May?
“A party.”
